Increasing Federated Identity, Roaming and E-infrastructure
Comprehensive training and support for federated identity implementation
Virtual training sessions hosted as part of APAN50 (Hong Kong), AAF standalone event (Australia), and APAN51 (Pakistan), covering federation setup, policy development, and SAML implementation.
Individual follow-up sessions with NRENs to understand local needs, refine implementation plans, and guide federation deployment steps.
Assistance in drafting federation rules and MetaData Registration Practice (MDRP) statements for Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Thailand.
National workshops supported in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Thailand, with presentations at international forums like eduGAIN and REFEDS.
Formal naming and REFEDS registry publication for federations like TigerFed (Bangladesh), ThaiIDF (Thailand), and Federasi.ID (Indonesia).
Successfully launched federations connecting to the global eduGAIN network
Measurable achievements in federated identity infrastructure development
Wide range of network engineers, university staff, and federation operators improved technical and policy skills across three comprehensive training events.
India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh now have production federations connected to the global eduGAIN network.
Indonesia and Thailand completed federation setup and were listed on REFEDS registry, with eduGAIN onboarding in progress.
At least six mentors across different economies now actively support national federation efforts for sustainable development.
Eight countries developed or published federation policy documents and MDRP statements in line with eduGAIN requirements.
Overcoming obstacles in federated identity implementation
All events had to be conducted online, limiting networking opportunities and hands-on training depth that would have been possible in face-to-face sessions.
Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam had minimal or no participation due to lack of contact, internal challenges, or resource constraints.
Most NRENs focused heavily on technical skills; training on sustainability, outreach, and stakeholder engagement was insufficient for long-term success.
Expanding federated identity adoption and sustainability
APAN IAM Task Force will continue providing technical and policy support for emerging federations across the region.
Similar initiative planned with African NRENs using iFIRE's proven training approach and methodologies.
Indonesia, Thailand, and Nepal are in the pipeline for eduGAIN onboarding to increase global connectivity.
Continued focus on stakeholder engagement, sustainable funding models, and securing national-level institutional buy-in.
